When it comes to adventure there are two ways of experiencing it. The first is on a much more commercial level where you sign up for a day tour as part of a larger group. This is usually done for people on a budget and is a great option to experience some of the best adventures where you are visiting. The second option is a much more authentic experience. Where you actually become part of the behind the scene adventure outfitter company. Here you contract an outfitter to be your personal guides, tranpsortation, and adventure operator for the week. This will result in much more privacy and attention to extras experience more stops along the way. Here is our list of our favore adventure companies for families in Costa Rica that not only work as a booking agency but can also be your one stop shop outfitter for adventures.
Costa Rican Resource
Well this happens to be my company so of course I was going to mention it. Don’t worry I mention some other great companies of friends in the industry below also. Costa Rican Resource has been in the business for the last 15 years and started with operating family adventures. My first tours were throwing the raft, rappeling gear, and surf boards on the roof of the land rover and making our way around Costa Rica. Not much has changed other than we own our own lodge on the Pacuare River with a zipline and tarzan swing and we have expanded more storage space for our toys.
We have mantained being a small business while paying for our habit of running rivers and being in the outdoors. Our passion for adventure, Costa Rica, and showing our guest authentic experiences keeps us innovating every year. We are based out of Turrialba and plan on building our second lodge in the Turrialba mountains breaking ground in 2020 with views of the smoking Turrialba Volcano.
CRR is owned by Tom Ranieri (me) who has resided in Costa Rica for the last 20 years and worked as a river and naturalist guide during 18 of those years.
Serendipity is the pioneer of personalized eco-adventures in Costa Rica. They are loyal to the standards of taking every extra step to operate trips privately. This comes at a cost but many with the money say it is worth it. Serendipity over the years has mantained a size of medium to small and keeping with the motto of being an outfitter and not just a tour booking company. Like Costa Rican Resource they too are based out of Turrialba but operate very well the San Carlos region.
The staff and guides are great at Serendipity having some of the old school crew that keep clients coming back for years.
Here is another company owned by close friends the Lopez brothers. They too have been guiding for years for companies such as Outward Bound and have formed an excellent company in the south of Costa Rica in the town of San Isidro. You will start to see a pattern that your more personalized outfitters are in areas outside of the heavy tourist spots. The Lopez brothers offer some great adventures in the area with rafting, rappeling, and long hikes.
With the information above I gave you the key to have 3 totally different family trips in different areas to Costa Rica. You can book Autentico for your southern experience, Serendipity for San Carlos and Guanacaste experience, and Costa Rican Resource for your Turrialba and Caribbean experience. Costa Rican Resource could operate all 3 but what would the adventure industry be without your friends being happy also!
