Grano de Oro is our favorite city hotel in San Jose. What we probably like best about it while working with family trips in Costa Rica is that the former owners of the Grano de Oro building were the Pozuelo Family. This is where the Pozuelo family lived and they are famous in Costa Rica for the Pozuelo cookies which are often a favorite of kids on our trips.

Grano de Oro refers to in Spanish the "Grain of Gold" which reflects the time of the 1840's when coffee gave an enormous economic boost to Costa Rica. The Hotel Grano de Oro is located just 20 minutes away from the San Jose Airport and only a few blocks from the La Sabana Park which is San Jose's version of Central Park. This is a colonial style hotel with what we consider the best restuarant in all of San Jose where you might find yourself rubbing elbows with the diplomats, presidents, and other well to do individuals from around Central America. The rooms are very luxurious but still hold on to its colonial touch with pictures of old times in the hallways offering a history lesson on the last 150 years of the city of San Jose.

The Grano de Oro Hotel is part of the Small Luxurious Boutique Hotels of Costa Rica putting it on a list of luxury hotels that hold a high standard of service while operating with 40 rooms or less.

Reasons to Go:

  • Great location for late or early flights
  • Over the top service
  • Rooms are perfect
  • Food is extremely tasty
  • Walking distance to main sites in San Jose but still not noisy

Reasons NOT to Go:

  • Not looking to stay in San Jose
  • Don't visit San Jose just to stay at Grano de Oro
  • Fancy! But many travelers are staying so no special dress code or anything of such
