Danaus Reserve

This is small nature reserve located just outside the area of La Fortuna at the base of the Arenal Volcano. The specialty of this place is to be able to observe what a reforested cow pasture can look like just after 11 years. The reserve is only 9 acres and filled with wildlife like poisonous dart frogs, sloths, butterlflies and more. This makes for a great half day trip and if you have a good naturalist guide you can learn almost everything you need to know about the tropical rainforest in this small area.

Another reason our CRR guides love this place is that one has a chance to experience wildlife upclose. It is a great place for kids as they have hands-on encounters with many different colorful species.

Why You Should Go?

  • This is a very educational area that all visitors of Costa Rica should get the concept of. Costa Rica's rainforest was almost completely destroyed in the 80's to supply the fast food chain industry in the US with beef.
  • Here you can see a small example of what Cost Rica has done to bring thoserainforests back.
  • The hiking is very easy and in a small area so you can get a lot done in a short about of time.
  • Great for kids upclose action with very cool looking animals.

Why You Should NOT Go?

  • Don't make the trip to La Fortuna just to see Danaus
  • If you are not interested in leaving a better planet for future generations
